Cords cause more than 3,300 residential fires a year which, these fires cause an estimated 50 deaths and 270 injuries a year. The following are ways you can prevent these fires: 

  • ​ Ensure cords are plugged in properly to outlets/extension cords

  • Don't overload extension cords, for example by plugging in an additional extension cord to the existing one

  • Before use make sure cords are not damaged and are meant for the device in use 

  • Do not plug a cord in an outlet that it is not intended for, for example don't plug a three pronged plug into and two pronged plug outlet
